Welcome to Spencer’s Farm Shop in Essex; a family run business established in 1973 as a Fruit Farm. The Farm Shop was opened in 2000 followed by the Coffee Shop in 2010. We are located in a small village called Wickham St Pauls, located just off the A131 between Halstead and Sudbury.
The Farm Shop is run by Jenny Spencer, third generation of the family to run Spencer’s and her business partner Jo O’Boyle. Both Jenny and Jo recently gave up their corporate careers in London to move to the countryside to get a better work; life balance whilst wanting to work for themselves. They took over the running of the shop in March 2016. In September 2016 they Farm Shop won Farm Shop of the year (2016) with Essex Life Magazine at their Food and Drink Awards. This award was granted for the devotion to supporting local suppliers and the amount of locally sourced produce that the Farm Shop sells
The fruit farm side of the business continues to be run by the Spencer’s as it has been since the 1970’s! Pick your own fruit is available from the end of June and is hugely popular and a great thing to enjoy for everyone.
The farm shop has a vast range, which includes fruit & vegetables (locally sourced where possible), biscuits, cakes, confectionery, crisps, cheese, fresh meat, jams & preserves, cordials, dried goods, frozen food (by Field Fayre), wine, beer, cider and spirits!
We try to source as much from local producers as possible and are always looking for new suppliers so do get in touch if you are a local producer!
What’s more; at the back of the shop we have a large play area for children including a sand pit, climbing frame, vintage tractor and ride on tractors. In May 2016 we started our own small petting farm too with Goats, Rabbits, Guinea Pigs and Chickens.
The Evolution of Pick Your Own at Spencer's
Strawberries and Raspberries were first grown at Wickham in 1973, shortly after Pick-Your-Own became popular.
In 1977 as demand for Pick-Your-Own grew, we began planting a wider range of fruit and vegetables including Gooseberries, Loganberries, Red and Blackcurrants, Blackberries, Tayberries, Plums, Runner Beans, Sweetcorn and Courgettes.
In 1987 we increased our apple acreage with mainly cox - still the nations favourite - plus a wide selection of other varieties - 18 to date.
In the last two years we have added Asparagus, Cherries, Pumpkins and Herbs to our list of homegrown products.
Adjacent to the shop is the Coffee Shop; a place to relax by the fire in the colder months or sit on the outside decking in the warmer months whilst enjoying the delicious home made food cooked and prepared by Ray & Frosty Mead.
